Gaydon, briefing by fear

21/11/2015

At least 300 people attended the briefing of this race. It is subtitled "driving the impossible" to give more the idea of how extreme it is. Each supervisor has amply illustrated all the difficulties, the top reasons for the breakdown, the disease risks, the lack of roads in Mongolia and, therefore, the absolute necessity of seizing well the mechanisms and functioning of the GPS. Then the trial along the streets of the county is served to regain confidence with the tools. We two "drivers by chance" were in the car with Marco Cajani, president of Scuderia del Portello and, apart from a couple of errors due primarily to the lack of Tripmaster, we managed to return unscathed and happy at the base. We identify one after another all the waypoint and collect controls correctly. They gave us the metal plates, vests, shoulder strap and key ring with the race numbers. They took us extra pounds for a tracker that will allow everyone to know exactly where we lost during the rally. Who had the car ready, brought and exhibited it in the parking lot. All cars were very muscular, with a very sophisticated level of preparation. The Belgian drivers of a Datsun 240Z looked at our group "Those with Giulia" with commiseration ("Alfa Romeo? I do not think we'll see you in Paris ... Best wishes!) His engine, however,  at the end of the ride to orient with GPS, had an awful noise... We met friends from organizations, we hugged Andy "Pasquale" Inskip, chief mechanic more competent and sympathetic in the world. In the museum all English cars, including a pink one, a mixture between a jet and a space shuttle on six wheels. Not suitable to our Mongol needs, I would say. Better some of the classic bicycles at the entrance ...
